Our Right to Choose (dir. Hanan Dirya), co-produced by Treasa O’Brien (Ireland) and Aka Hansen (Denmark) had its Irish premiere at Galway Film Fleadh on 16 July. In this 10minute documentary we meet Jenni, mother of two, who is a pro-choice activist living in Galway, where a Savita Halappanaaver died after being refused an abortion in 2012. The film follows Jenni and other pro-choice activists as they plan a public action and commemoration of her death four years on as part of the movement to repeal the 8th amendment in the Irish constitution which equates the foetus with the woman thus inhibiting any legislation on abortion. The film portrays pro-choice female activists living in Galway, exploring the challenges they face and what drives them to continue.
The film was made as part of Galway Stories, a 3-week intensive film programme in October 2016 where 16 European filmmakers lived and worked together to produce four short films in Galway.
